Creating Solutions
– In 2007, Estee Lauder launched a Cost of Goods initiative to identify the costs of in-line packages. As is often the case, various departments had differing opinions on priorities. Corporate demanded that Purchasing identify solutions that would reduce packaging costs,. The marketing and creative teams demanded the best packages in terms of design and appearance regardless of costs; and Packaging demanded a functional/quality package. In one instance, marketing reluctantly agreed to change from a toddle to a tube in favor of a 35% packaging cost savings. However, the package had quality issues. RLM presented a new and improved cap with a metal overshell that dramatically improved the quality of the package pleasing both the marketing and packaging teams. Furthermore, RLM managed to reduce the overall package cost by an additional 50% (even with the improved cap), thoroughly satisfying Estee Lauder’s Cost of Goods initiative.
